Like many readers, I have to say that I have a soft spot for pretty covers. Recently I spent two months studying abroad in Italy (until the spread of coronavirus caused my university to call me back to the US) and while I was there, I loved wandering around my local bookstore and looking at the beautiful foreign covers of familiar books. Of course, since this was in Italy, all those beautiful foreign covers I was looking at were of Italian translations.
I don’t know about anyone else, but for me, this is just another motivation for me to learn Italian. Of course, there are dozens, if not hundreds of reasons to learn another language. For me, seeing my pretty hardcover Italian edition of The Goose Girl on my bookshelf is a tangible reminder to get my Italian good enough to actually be able to read it.
Not all foreign covers are created equal. Some of them, like the Italian The Goose Girl cover are gorgeous. Others are not so much, and even more come down to personal preference. I’ve noticed that when it comes down to US vs UK covers, I tend to like the US versions better. But then I am from the US.
What do you think about foreign covers? Do you tend to prefer the version of the cover from your own country, or do you like the covers across the pond better?
