Welcome back to the second-to-last month of The Debut a Month Challenge, where I read and review a debut novel that was published that month every month for the year of 2021. In November, I was pretty busy between work and NaNoWriMo, but not too busy to read November's debut novel, Natasha Bowen's SKIN OF THE SEA.
SKIN OF THE SEA is a YA fantasy blending the fairytale of The Little Mermaid, African culture and mythology, and the horrors of the 1400s era slave trade. It's a unique mix, and Bowen weaves in the various inspirations to perfection, crafting an adventure that's as thrilling as it is original. At around 336 pages, SOTS is no slouch, but believe me when I say I sped through it in one sitting because I was just that hooked.
SKIN OF THE SEA is the kind of book that makes you relieved when you learn a sequel's coming, not because the first left you unsatisfied in any way, but because you're just that eager for more. If you want a new novel to add to your holiday wishlist or just something to pick up today, SKIN OF THE SEA is an excellent choice.
